Mountain’s Traditional House Krousona

The house is located in the village of Krousona in the municipality of Malevizi in the prefecture of Heraklion. The distance from the center of Heraklion to Krousonas is about 25 km and the duration is half an hour by car.

Krousonas is a small town and community of the province of Malevizi. It is located southwest of Heraklion, at a distance of 21 km. It is built amphitheatrically on the hills of Plagia, Koupos and Livadiotis. For the friends of the mountainous dirt routes, there is a wonderful route that starts from Kroussonas and ends in the forest of Vromoneros at an altitude of 1300 meters above the sea.
The route is ideal for avid hikers, while for onboarders, especially in winter, the motorcycle should be done by “off-road” car. In total the route is ten kilometers of which seven are dirt roads.
You start from Kroussona and go up east. In front of you is the Plai, an amusement park under construction (5,000 trees) with a panoramic view of Kroussona.
After about a kilometer the road splits.
“Livadi” ends on the right after seven kilometers in the plateau of Kroussona, where 300,000 pears and a few apple trees are cultivated. The location is wonderful and worth a visit, especially in summer. From here you can see the gorge of Kroussonas that starts from the village of Kitharida and reaches ZOMINTHO, the ancient spring of Psiloritis. In fact, it is said that the Minoans used to take from this gorge to go to the IDEON ANDRON, and there are still visible signs of this ancient road !!
To the left of the crossroads, going up you have on your right the slope of the peak “Gournos” and in front of you the peak “Skinakas”. The whole slope of Gournos is covered with sage, oregano, mulberry and other aromatic plants.
After 800 meters, an intersection leads, after another 300 meters, to Ai Giannis “Psilo” at the top of Koudouni. This place has been named by the archaeologist Professor Sakelarakis as “the veranda of Crete”. Justifiably, since from there you can see the whole of Malevizi to the Heraklion coast, the “theomorphic” mountain of Yukhtas and the island of Zeus.
This visit is also worth a visit, and the Community of Kroussona has taken care to beautifully shape the area, with a built-in grill, a fountain with running water, etc.
Leaving Ai Giannis high and continuing your way from the crossroads, you arrive after three kilometers of enchanting forest route, in Lako of Lima or Bromonero. The name Bromonero (and not bromonero) is ancient and comes from the words “vrimo” which means strong, and “sacred”.
In the forest of prinos and maples, you will find an ideal place for camping, with built-in grills, benches, fountains, etc. that the community has taken care to shape.
Above is the shelter a stone room with the basics for survival (nuts, wine, brown sugar, etc.). It is located just 3 km from the plateau of Nida and the relatively smooth passage “THINOKOLAS” can be seen.
Enjoy the view and observe the natural “bonsai”, small catfish, which from the constant grazing of the kids and the fury of the air, have been left in a dwarf state.

At a very short distance of about 500m in the village square the visitor can find Super markets, pharmacies, traditional cafes, taverns, bank, butchers, furniture and clothing stores, modern cafe-bars. It also has gas stations, traditional bakeries and a cooperative of women who make Cretan pastries.

There are also many Byzantine churches.
They organize many excursions in the mountains but also celebrations. There are remarkable routes for walking in the village but also outside to the mountain. There are many routes for cyclists to and from Heraklion because it is very close to it. It is ideal for winter and summer stays.
